Introduction:


As rational beings, we desire order in our lives. One way the need for order is displayed is in the existence of social protocols. In reading Beowulf, we see what happens when social protocol is violated (through the actions of Grendel), and the subsequent effects on society.

Tasks:


  1. Your first task will be to investigate and analyze three social protocols of American or the international society.
  2. Find a story demonstrating an upholding or a violation of one of the protocols you researched on one of the listed social news aggregators.
  3. Your third task will be to create a Youtube presentation demonstrating proper behaviors of protocol, and an example of a breach of protocol for each of the three that you demonstrate.
  4. You will create a Powerpoint presentation defending your opinion to the question: Is Grendel a terrorist?

Think About it:


What kinds of protocols do you abide by in regards to authority?
What protocols do you expect from others?
What are some protocols that can be violated without causing major social disruption?
What are some examples of social protocols that cause major social disruption?
What kinds of protocol is Grendel violating? What are the effects of his violation?

Procedure:


  1. Review Beowulf, specifically the scene where Grendel makes his initial appearances.
  2. Using the provided links, research three protocols of American and international society.
  3. Visit one of the three listed social news aggregator websites and search them for a story demonstrating a proper or improper display of one of the social protocols you researched. Include a link to your selection at the end of your powerpoint presentation.
  4. In groups of two, create a Youtube video demonstrating your understanding of the protocols you have researched. Along with your demonstration of proper protocol, you will illustrate the breach, and the social consequences of the protocols you researched.
  5. In your same group, you will create a Powerpoint presentation answering the question: Is Grendel a terrorist? You will be graded on your presentation and content of your argument, not on your specific opinion.

Why This Goal Is Important: Literature transmits ideas, reflects societies and eras and expresses the human imagination. It brings understanding, enrichment and joy. Literature study includes understanding the structure and intent of a short poem or a long, complex book. By exploring the techniques that authors use to convey messages and evoke responses, students connect literature to their own lives and daily experiences.

CONCLUSION

Upon completion of this webquest students should be more familiar with the social protocols of their society as well as those of other nations and cultures and also have gained a better understanding of the effects of social protocols and the consequences of breaking them. Students should also now also be able to relate these social protocols to the interactions between literary characters and the influence that protocol violations and affirmations have on the context and development of a story.
