Discovering the Cultures of our Class A Webquest for the 6th Grade Level


As you are aware, cultural awareness week is coming up for our school. Our school consists of a large diverse group of people. It is important to understand the many different cultures in order to appreciate them. Your assignment is to research and develop a PowerPoint presentation on your cultural background. Research to find out more information that you may need clarification on, consult your family for detail on traditions you may or may not follow, and find neat artifacts that you may want to share with the class during your presentation. You will use Inspiration in order to brainstorm and create an outline for your project. Think about all aspects of your culture including languages, literature, arts, food, clothing, religion, and other factors that differentiates your culture. Then take this information and explain how your culture is represented and fits into the United States.
  • Some questions that you may want to consider:
    • Are there any holidays celebrated in the US that were generated by your culture?
    • Are there any foods that are ethnic to your culture?
    • What do you appreciate most about your culture?
    • What makes your culture unique?

What you need to do

  • Brainstorm and create an outline using Inspiration.
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation to present to class. This presentation will be approximately two minutes in length. Include artifacts and other visual aids for props. You will need to discuss at least 5 different aspects of your culture.

Timeline for activities
  1. Research your culture in class. Look up all different aspects of your culture.
  2. HW: Talk with your family at home and find out more detailed information about what aspects you follow and participate in. Apply what you learned from your research and ask your family if they are familiar with some of the information that may have been surprising to you.
  3. Start brainstorming and create your outline using Inspiration in class. Organize your findings and information in order to prepare yourself to create the PowerPoint. You can use any form of organization, but make sure to use a consistent format and include images in some form when creating your outline.
  4. HW: Start gathering visual aids to use for your project. This can include images found online, pictures, stamps, clothing, or any appropriate artifacts you may come across at home or elsewhere.
  5. Begin working on your PowerPoint in class. You will have 2 days in classtime and homework to work on this. You will need to make sure you are on task in order to be prepared, have this completed in time. Make sure to take advantage of class time to ask questions as they may arise.

Rubrics for grading


After completing this project you will have learned about the cultures of your classmates. You will be able to compare the similarities and differences between all the cultures you have learned about. This project should have created a better understanding of the many cultures that exist in our country and around the world. We should all appreciate and enjoy the cultures of our world.
