States and Capitals

INTRODUCTION
  • It is time to explore the United States in way that you have never before, you and a partner will choose one of the 50 states that represents this great country and be able to present your research to the class when the assignments are due. These assignments will be done during class time. When completing this project, pretend your audience knows nothing about the state you choose, be creative when doing this project.

Tasks (Choose 1 of the 2)
  • Create a travel brochure on the state you are doing research on. This should include facts from the state such as (population, flag, state bird, etc.). You will be able to do this research in class when we are in the computer lab. This should be done almost like a tourist attraction, make the reader want to come to the state you did research on.
  • Using Photostory, obtain images from the internet to present in a visual presentation to the class. Include images that show what the state is known for and what you would feel is entertaining about that certain state. Give a feel of what it is like to live in the state that you have chose. The presentation should be 8-10 minutes that includes voiceovers.
PROCESS
  1. Choose a partner that you will be working with for the duration of the project
  2. Choose one of the two tasks (above) that you and your partner will be working on
  3. Use one of the websites (that are listed below) to get your information for your state
  4. Create this task based on the rubric provided (also listed below)

STATE GOAL 17: Understand world geography and the effects of geography on society, with an emphasis on the United States.

Why This Goal Is Important: The need for geographic literacy has never been greater or more obvious than in today's tightly interrelated world. Students must understand the world's physical features, how they blend with social systems and how they affect economies, politics and human interaction. Isolated geographic facts are not enough. To grasp geography and its effect on individuals and societies, students must know the broad concepts of spatial patterns, mapping, population and physical systems (land, air, water). The combination of geographic facts and broad concepts provides a deeper understanding of geography and its effects on individuals and societies.

CONCLUSION
Remember when completing one of these tasks, you want to choose that state. Make sure you and your partner come to an agreement on which state you will be doing research for. Not everyone will know a lot about the state you are looking up so make sure all of your information is clearly stated in your presentations. Bre creative and have fun with this project!!
